Light Rail, Community Center, Superintendent meetings (and more!)

Ah, autumn: The crisp air, the bright colored foliage, the opportunity to keep warm by huddling together with your neighbors at community meetings (many of which include snacks).

Here is a list of community meetings being held in the first half of November. As always, we recommend attending them all. However, if you can only choose one, we’d steer you toward the Advisory Council/Community Meeting at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center. Your input into the future of center operations — prior to the big budget decisions happening in City Hall in November — is vital.

  • Tuesday, November 1: Ravenna-Bryant Community Association Board Meeting, Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Ave NE), 7-9 PM. All neighbors are welcome to attend. Agenda to come.
  • Tuesday, November 1: Mayor’s Town Hall, Nathan Hale High School (10750 30th Ave NE), 5:30-8 PM. Mayor Mike McGinn, City Departments & Community Groups will answer your questions and hear what’s on your mind.
    (5:30-6:30 Meet and Greet: City Departments and local community organizations have information tables, answer questions and offer volunteer opportunities; 6:30-6:40 Youth performance- 6:40-8:00 Open question and answer session with the Mayor)
  • Thursday, November 3: North Link Light Rail Roosevelt Station Open House, Roosevelt High School Commons (1410 NE 66th Street), 6-8:30 PM (presentation starts at 6:30 PM). The open house will focus on the nuts and bolts of construction plans (NOT station design plans) at Roosevelt Station.
  • Wednesday, November 9: Advisory Council/Community Meeting, Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Ave NE), 6:30-8:30 PM. Input sought from community members about future use and operating hours of the RECC in 2012. Staff present from the RECC and the new Northeast Geographic team, as well as members of Parks and Recreation leadership, talking about how well parks is meeting our needs in the Ravenna-Eckstein community. Child care and light refreshments available.
  • Monday, November 14: Community Meeting on the Permanent Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, Roosevelt High School (1410 NE 66th Street), 7-8:30 PM. National search for a new Superintendent, or hire Interim Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield? Input sought from members of the public. (Survey available in mid-November as well.) Childcare and light snacks will be available starting at 6:30 PM. Hosted by the Seattle Council PTSA.
  • Wednesday, November 16: North Link Light Rail Brooklyn Station Open House, Neptune Theatre (1303 NE 45th St), 6-8:30 PM (presentation starts at 6:30 PM). The November open house will focus on the nuts and bolts of construction plans at Brooklyn Station.

Your Busy Weekend in the Ravenna Neighborhood (updated)

Here is a smattering of events happening today (Saturday) and next week.

Saturday, October 1

  • Help out our neighborhood and its community organization by delivering copies of the Ravenna-Bryant Community Association’s Fall 2011 Newsletter to your part of the neighborhood. No delivery area too small. Please contact RBCA Land Use Committee Chair Andrew Miller for more information.
  • Ad partner UW Medicine is holding an open house at their new Ravenna Clinic location (4915 25th Ave NE #300) from 1-4 PM. Tour the new facilities, listen to and meet members of the UW Husky Marching Band (from 1-1:30 PM), meet UW mascot Harry the Husky (1-2 PM), enter to win gift certificates to University Village, and more. More information about this new UW Medicine primary care clinic and today’s open house can be found here.
  • Ravenna Community Garden hosts a Harvest celebration dinner this Saturday Oct. 1 from 5:30-7:00 PM at the Ravenna Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Ave NE). Pasta, salad bread and dessert on the menu. Donations happily accepted: $5.00 individual, $10.00 family.
  • Candy Cane Lane holds its annual yard sale (weather permitting) on Saturday, October 1, from 8AM-1PM, at 2132 Park Rd (the corner house at the bend on Ravenna Blvd, closest to the Ravenna playground and parking lot). It is a multi-family sale put together by the Candy Cane Lane families, and we use the proceeds to buy all the paint, plywood, lights, decorations, etc for the yearly holiday display, as well as to pay the electric bill to run the revolving carousel. This year we will have some furniture, including two children’s rolltop desks, some outdoor items, plus lots of toys, books, children’s clothing, baby items, kitchen items, and household goods such as lamps, curtains, rugs, etc. We never know what the neighbors bring out until the day of the sale, and every year we have some lovely treasures.

And into Next Week

  • Join other Eckstein Middle School parents at a gardening work party
    in the raised beds in the back courtyard every Monday and Wednesday from 9-10 AM (weather permitting). Please bring gloves and weeding tools if you have them. For more information or to make a donation please contact Gretchen Bauer at

RBCA Board Meeting tonight

The Ravenna-Bryant Community Association has its regularly scheduled Board Meeting tonight, at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Avenue NE), from 7-9PM.

Prior to that Board Meeting, however, two committees will be meeting (at 6PM, also at the RECC): The SR 520 Committee and the Communication Committee. Community members are welcome to not only attend these meetings but JOIN these committees, if they feel so moved.

RBCA Board Meeting tonight

The first Tuesday of the month is upon us once again. Here’s the agenda for tonight’s Ravenna-Bryant Community Association board meeting:

I would like to note that a meeting held on June 28th, assorted board members of the Wedgwood Community Council, the Maple Leaf Community Council, and the RBCA met with the owner of Pandora Adult Cabaret (8914 Lake City Way NE).

RBCA board president, Sarah Swanberg, was the only woman present at the meeting.

And while she was attending the meeting due to her position on the RBCA board, the Ravenna Blog would also like to thank Sarah for representing the female population of the neighborhood/NE Seattle at that meeting as well.

Ravenna-Bryant Community Association meeting tonight, in new location

It’s the first Tuesday of June: Time to get your monthly dose of vitamin RBCA.

While the Ravenna-Bryant Community Association is meeting at its regular date and time (7PM), the location is different. Due to the renovations happening at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center, tonight’s meeting is being held in Bryant Elementary School’s library (3311 NE 60th Street). The library is straight ahead as you come in through the north (main) entrance to the school.

Topics for tonight’s agenda include:

  • Summary of local transportation issues
  • Discussion and a possible vote on supporting the Wedgwood Community Council’s vision plan for Wedgwood
  • Discussion of problems along the east side of 30th Avenue NE (east side of Calvary Cemetery)
  • Possible visit from Councilmember Tom Rasmussen

This week holds a plethora of community-related meetings, for the civically-inclined:

  • Roosevelt Neighborhood Association general meeting, Tuesday, May 24, 7:15-9:30PM, Calvary Christian Assembly Roosevelt High School, Room 242, 1410 NE 66th St
    Agenda includes an update on the rezoning in the Roosevelt neighborhood.
  • SR 520 Drop-in Information Session, Wednesday, May 25, 6-8PM, Ravenna Third Place Books (public meeting put on by the Washington State Department of Transportation)
  • Coalition for a Sustainable SR 520 and Laurelhurst Community Club, Wednesday, May 25, 7-8:30PM, Laurelhurst Community Center, main floor activity room, 4553 47th Ave NE (more information on this meeting available here)
  • North Link Light Rail Roosevelt Station meeting, Thursday, May 26th, 6-8:30PM, Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center, 6535 Ravenna Ave NE

I will be present at a couple of these (RNA and Light Rail). Regardless, if you attend any of the above meetings and would like to share your thoughts, please do so (via email or a comment below). I would love to hear your impressions of these projects as they move forward.

Please note the change of venue: Bryant Elementary instead of the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center. The RECC is closed for floor refinishing during the first Tuesday of June, the regularly reoccurring RBCA board meeting date.

Ravenna-Bryant Community Association board meeting tonight

It’s the first Tuesday of the month (May, in this case), so it’s time once again for a Ravenna-Bryant Community Association board meeting.

As usual, the RBCA board is meeting at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Avenue NE) from 7-9PM.

Topics include:

  • Reports from all our officers and committee chairs
  • Forming new committees for transportation issues, and an
  • Looking at forming a RBCA neighborhood plan.
  • Discussing who our representatives will be for the NEDC, Seattle Community Council Federation, and SPD’s North Precinct Advisory Council.
  • Per Johnson from the Wedgwood Community Council will attend to coordinate our neighborhood plans and provide general support from a neighboring community council
  • Paulo Nunes-Ueno from Children’s Livable Streets Initiative will give a 10 minute presentation

This is a board meeting, but anyone in the neighborhood is welcome to attend.

Ravenna-Bryant Community Association Community-Wide Meeting set for Tuesday, April 5th

After a few years of hibernation and nine months of reorganizing and rejuvenating board meetings, the Ravenna-Bryant Community Association is back in action, and holding a community-wide meeting at 7 PM on Tuesday, April 5, at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6536 Ravenna Avenue NE).

Anyone currently living in either the Ravenna or Bryant neighborhoods here in Northeast Seattle is welcome to attend (and become members, should they choose), as well as people who have businesses within those neighborhoods.

For a map of the RBCA boundaries, as well as those of other Northeast District community associations, visit this post on the RBCA’s website.

Topics and speakers on the agenda include:

  • voting in old and new RBCA board members
  • updates from the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association’s Land Use Committee Chair Jim O’Halloran on the status of the properties and development around Roosevelt High School
  • how to keep rats under control
  • 520 tolling
  • Cleanscapes’ “Neighborhood Waste Reduction Rewards Project”

The meeting is to be held in the community center’s multipurpose room, with has a maximum occupancy of about 100 people. For this reason, the organizers request that you RSVP to the meeting.

Childcare is available for potty-trained kids. $5 for the first child, $2 for additional. Healthy snack included.

Topics include the latest developments on the Roosevelt Development Group/Sisley project (which people particularly in northwest Ravenna should be paying attention to), and the Roosevelt neighborhood rezone.

Ravenna Bryant Community Association Board Meeting
Tuesday, March 1, 7 PM
Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center, 6535 Ravenna Avenue NE

Monthly RBCA board meetings (first Tuesdays) are always open for residents to attend. No official agenda out yet, but there will likely be a recap of the previous evening’s RNA Land Use meeting.

Northeast District Council Meeting
(Tentatively) Thursday, March 3, 7 PM
Wedgwood Presbyterian Church, 8008 35th Avenue NE

The NEDC generally meets on the first Thursday of the month, and the agenda often includes a speaker from city or county government (last month’s was City Council President Richard Conlin). Each active neighborhood council in the Northeast district of Seattle sends a representative to this meeting.

New schedule, location for future Ravenna Bryant Community Association meetings

GOOD NEWS: No more skipping dinner to make it to those 6 PM Ravenna Bryant Community Association meetings at the Northeast Branch (before it closes at 8 PM).

Starting next Tuesday, February 1, the RBCA will start holding its regular monthly meetings on first Tuesdays of the month at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Avenue NE). Start time of 7 PM.

The lovely Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center - Open weekdays until 9 PM!

On the agenda for this Tuesday’s meeting are reaffirming some replacement board members, continuing to discuss a new-and-improved (and updated) RBCA website, planning the community-wide meeting (set for Tuesday, April 5), and a neighborhood Major League outing proposal by yours truly*.
