You WERE going to rake leaves this weekend, honest. But the weather has you trapped inside, where there are blankets, and hot cocoa. And possibly cats.

Why not dedicate a few moments of your time to giving the city a piece of your mind?

Road Safety Summit Comment Form (and Forum)

Now through November 23: The Mayor and City Council would love to know how you feel about road safety. You can find the Road Safety Summit comments form here.

You will be asked to review traffic safety data and then give your answers to the following three questions:

1. What do you think are the highest priority safety problems to solve on Seattle roads?
2. What do you think are the most important things to do to make Seattle roads safer?
3. We often talk about what government can do to promote safety. What are the ways that groups and individuals can promote safety?

In case you do feel like leaving the house (and cats) on Tuesday, November 15, a public forum on road safety is being held at the Northgate Community Center (10510 5th Ave NE), from 6-8 PM. RSVP here.

University District StreetFair Survey

The Greater University Chamber of Commerce has a survey up regarding the Annual University District StreetFair (held on the third weekend of May annually). Responses will be used to help improve future StreetFairs.

Fabulous Feline Adoption Event at the RECC this Saturday *meow* (update)

UPDATE (Friday, November 11): We’ve been told that this weekend the Seattle Animal Shelter has agreed to waive adoption fees for adult cats, and is offering a special price for those adopting two kittens at once!

Nearly 50 cats and kittens will be available at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center on Saturday. It’s a purr-fect opportunity to adopt one (or more).

Look no further than this Saturday’s Fabulous Felines Cat Adoption Event at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Ave NE).

From 12-3 PM, the Seattle Animal Shelter will have a selection of cats from their foster care program available for adoption at the community center.

From The Scoop (the Seattle Animal Shelter news and events page):

Adoption prices range from $45 to $135 (see top of post for this weekend’s adoption specials) and include:
• Initial vaccinations
• Deworming
• Feline Leukemia testing
• Certificate for free health exam at local veterinarians
• Spay or neuter
• Microchip (About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip is injected under the cat’s skin, providing an identification number associated with that animal. Animal shelters can then “scan” a lost animal and retrieve its records from the microchip.)

Roosevelt Station Construction Open House Presentation

And now Part 2 to our Roosevelt Station Construction Open House coverage: The presentation slides themselves!


Click the Light Rail train above to view the presentation (3.6 MB PDF).

Highlights include information such as:

  • A 24-hour construction hotline number, manned by an actual person!
  • An open-to-the-public plant salvage event in early 2012 on the site of the townhouses.
  • Information on noise mitigation and lighting.
  • Probable routes for trucks entering and leaving the site.
  • Timelines for the whole project, and the next steps in the coming year.

There was also an animation of the construction site in the presentation and playing on a loop on a laptop among the open house information materials. While it is missing from the presentation above (but will be available later on the North Link Project website, here is a static glimpse of what it looks like:

Around 100 people attended the Roosevelt Station Construction Open House on Thursday, November 3 at Roosevelt High School.

Last of the NE Seattle community center public meetings this week

The last of the public meetings about community center operations in Northeast Seattle are all happening this week:

Northgate Community Center (10510 5th Ave NE), Tuesday, November 8 at 7 PM

Meadowbrook Community Center (10517 35th Ave NE), Wednesday, November 9 at 7 PM

Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Ave NE), Wednesday, November 9 at 7 PM

From the press release:

Parks and Recreation is holding public meetings to hear from communities about what activities and hours they would like to see at their nearest community center, consistent with the proposal in the Mayor’s proposed 2012 budget that would set up geographical groups of community centers whose staff would work together to provide services to that geographic area of the city.

The agenda for these meetings, from a letter from Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center’s coordinator, Trevor Gregg, is as follows:

• Talk with Parks and Recreation staff and neighbors about your ideas to build community relationships
• Help Parks and Recreation identify programs and services that are efficient and relevant for those living in the Ravenna-Eckstein community
• Work together with Parks and Recreation to identify potential operating hours for Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center in 2012
• Share your voice and personal vision/ideas with others

All community members, stakeholders and partners are encouraged to attend. Child care and light snacks are provided at each site.

Willy Wonka, eat your heart out – Will Bake for Food is back!

We love a good bake sale, don’t you?

Well, they do not get any better than Will Bake for Food.

Imagine a room full of baking bloggers who have donated their time, culinary talents, and tasty goodies in exchange for donations of food or cash to a local charity.

Donations of food or cash are exchanged at the door for tickets, which are then used to “buy” goods at all the various tables. Or, if you’re the gambling sort, raffle tickets can be purchased as well.

This year’s donation recipient is The Emergency Feeding Program of Seattle and King County. You can find a list of the items the Emergency Feeding Program needs most here (PDF).

This year’s bake sale of champions takes place on Saturday, November 12, at University Heights (5031 University Way NE), from 11AM-2PM.

Our haul from last year, long since consumed with gusto.

Last year’s event collected 1,903 pounds of food and $946 for Northwest Harvest. The 1,631 items sold by 54 bakers and 138 beverages (55 coffee, 83 cider) poured by 2 volunteers sold out in 90 minutes.

Learn Home Weatherization Tips with Sustainable NE Seattle

The days are growing shorter, the air is getting colder, and your heating bill is on the rise.

What a perfect time to learn about home weatherization.

Sustainable NE Seattle‘s November meeting will be held on Thursday, November 17, at the Wedgwood Presbyterian Church (8008 35th Ave NE), from 6:30-9 PM (social time with treats for the first half hour).

Here’s the event description:

There are some immediate things we can do to make our homes more energy efficient. We will learn what to do before replacing windows from our community expert [and Ravenna resident], Joel Gregory. Also, learn about Solarize NESeattle, project to bring reasonable pricing for solar power to our neighborhood. Additionally, SustainableWorks® home retrofitting org, will be here for input and Q&A.

Bring a snack to share, if you wish, and your own utensils.

Sustainable NE Seattle is, via their about page, “a community of citizens dedicated to building a sustainable, resilient future for our locality, which includes Seattle neighborhoods that are north of the ship canal, east of I-5, and north to about 110th St NE.”
